Scribenote becomes the first veterinary software company certified to ISO/IEC 42001

An independent certification recognizes Scribenote’s AI management system and its commitment to building AI for veterinary medicine responsibly, ethically, and transparently

Scribenote has achieved ISO/IEC 42001 certification, the world's leading standard for the responsible management of artificial intelligence, becoming, to our knowledge, the first veterinary software company to earn it. The certificate was issued by Insight Assurance, an accredited certification body, and covers the AI management system behind the Scribe and Companion.

What ISO/IEC 42001 is

ISO/IEC 42001 is the first international standard for AI management systems. It sets independently audited requirements for how an organization governs the AI it builds and operates: transparency, accountability, fairness, risk management, and protection of the people affected by AI systems. Certification is granted only after an accredited third party verifies these controls are in place and working.

It adds to Scribenote’s existing SOC 2 Type II attestation and its operation under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

What this means for veterinary practices

As AI tools move quickly into veterinary workflows, clinics are increasingly being asked to evaluate vendors they have no straightforward way to vet. Standards like ISO/IEC 42001 give practices an independent reference point: evidence that a provider has a formal, audited system for governing its AI, protecting clinical data, and keeping humans in control of the output.

This will matter more over time as AI evolves. The more AI can do in the exam room, the more a practice needs to know that the company behind it is accountable to an international standard for how it builds and runs its AI.

Scribenote intends to maintain and expand the scope of its certification over time, and encourages other companies building AI for the profession to pursue the same standard.

Building AI the way it should be built

The certification reflects how Scribenote believes AI should be brought into a clinical setting: openly, accountably, and with the interests of veterinarians, staff, clients, and patients in front of the technology.
